Viruses are constantly evolving, and new versions – called alternatives – often appear. For the first time, health officials are concerned about the types listed in the United Kingdom and South Africa.
In Press release, Minnesota Department of Health (MHH) checks 50 random samples each week at the University of Minnesota Laboratories in its special monitoring program.
Regional Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm said the COVID test is important and that ongoing efforts by Minnesota will help curb the spread of the disease.
“Even when we work hard to defeat COVID-19, we know that the virus is improving like any other virus,” Malcolm said in a statement. “This is another reason why we want to limit the spread of COVID-19 – the fewer people who get COVID-19, the less likely they are to develop the virus. The good news is that we are able to slow down the spread of this COVID and all. 19 variations by staying indoors, and using experience and real prevention methods to test when appropriate.
Last week, MDH said in a separate follow-up investigation that it had found two more UK alternatives.
